Binary Calculator

Abstract

BinaryCalc is capacity planning tool to the indirect costs when procuring GigaSpaces, Coherence, ScaleOut, etc. into production.
Often there is a need to clearly estimate the footprint of business objects stored within In-Memory Data Grid (IMDG) (for example GigaSpaces XAP).
There is no 100% theoretical way to estimate IMDG memory requirements, including indexes. The Binary Calculator project takes experimental approach for capacity measurement.
Business objects are automatically generated with given probabilistic characteristics and loaded into the IMDG in a constant flow.
During this operation, free heap size of each JVM in the cluster is gathered and approximate business object footprint (including indexes overhead) is calculated.

Speaker

Victor Samoylov is a Senior Staff Engineer and Team Leader for Grid Dynamics. He leads two areas of research and development for Grid Dynamics: Java-based grid technologies and grid-enablement of enterprise applications.
In the past, Victor delivered a number of successful onsite and offsite grid projects for clients in the financial, communications and retail industries, such as PayPal, Bank of America, JDSU and Tudor. He is currently developing a performance benchmark for grid-enabled 3-tiered enterprise applications and a set of design patterns for turning traditional tiered applications into scalable grid services.
Victor specializes in In-Memory Data Grids and has extensive experience with major commercial frameworks including GigaSpaces XAP, Oracle Tangosol and Gemstone Gemfire. He is also a technical lead on the Open Spaces Binary Calculator, an open source project used to estimate memory usage of GigaSpaces grids and Prospero (to be published). The Binary Calculator is an innovative application profiling tool used early in the grid design process to accurately estimate the required CPU, IO and memory resources required and recommend the optimal deployment topology.

Victor holds a Ph.D. in Discrete Mathematics and Cybernetics from Saratov State University. He is an adjunct professor and also Director of the University's High-Performance Grid Laboratory.
