The Well-Grounded Java Developer

Abstract

What makes a Java developer “well-grounded”?

We believe that in the coming years, one of the most important skills a developer needs is a sense of perspective. Perspective is what enables a developer to relate their day-to-day work and self-development to the large-scale trends in Java, other JVM languages and the wider industry. Perspective is what allows a developer to distinguish between what's hype and what's important to get involved with. It's the development of this perspective that truly makes a developer well-grounded.

In this talk, we discuss the five major themes within the core of programming languages which we believe are in the midst of a renaissance. Whilst external aspects such as cloud, NoSQL, etc, etc have been grabbing more than their share of the headlines, these topics are what are reinventing the day to day practice of coding for many developers.

  • Polyglot programming

  • Concurrency

  • Type Systems

  • Functional Programming

  • Modularity
