Keeping Your Options Open, Even if the Cloud is Not

Abstract

Cloud computing is a major shift in the way applications and data are deployed and managed. Once you've chosen a cloud vendor, how can you avoid being locked in to a proprietary API or service? And even if you're happy with your cloud provider, what happens when you partner with someone who uses different cloud services? Unfortunately, the picture of cloud standards is, well, cloudy. In this session we'll look at the services provided by the major cloud vendors and the standards efforts of various standards bodies. From there we'll look at design patterns and code libraries to make your cloud computing applications as robust, vendor-independent and open as possible.

Cloud computing is possible because of the virtualization and commoditization of hardware and processing power; to make the most of it, we'll need standardization as well.
